Safety in the Lab Discussion
Prior to the Safety lecture, I asked students some basic sewing safety questions. Students responded, and the discussion was very organic and lasted about five minutes prior to giving the actual lecture using overhead projector transparencies.
Questions included:
How can you prevent injury around the sewing machine?
What is the point of going over safety precautions in the lab?
Goal Met: Students will demonstrate appropriate work ethic, safety, and respect throughout the labs.
Lab Safety Post-Test
Following the Lab Safety lecture, students completed a 15 question quiz which they had to pass with 80% before proceeding to using the sewing machine.
Goal Met: Students will demonstrate appropriate work ethic, safety, and respect throughout the labs.
Basic Skills Evaluation
Following a demonstration and practice, students had to complete an evaluation demonstrating their proficiency on the following:
-
Threading the upper part of the sewing machine
-
Threading the lower part of the sewing machine
-
Threading the bobbin
-
5/8 inch regular stitch with a back stitch
-
1/2 inch basting stitch
-
Identify sewing machine parts
Goal Met: Students will demonstrate appropriate work ethic, safety, and respect throughout the labs.
Goal Met: Students will demonstrate basic sewing skills
Goal Met: Students will identify different sewing notions and parts of the sewing machine.
Sewing Notions Pre-Test
The Sewing Notions Pre-Test was in the form of a Kahoot! which is an online quiz or survey program that students can answer the questions from their phones or laptops. We were fortunate to have laptops in the classroom, and students worked in pairs to work on this pre-test. The test worked to begin identifying different sewing items the students would be using throughout the unit.
Goal Met: Students will identify different sewing notions and parts of the sewing machine.
Project Construction & Rubric
After students passed the safety test and the basic skills evaluation they were able to proceed to their project. Each class had a specific kind of project:
Intro to FACS: Square pillow, custom decoration
FACS I: Pillow, self-bought material
FACS II: Self-selected project from Haan Crafting catalog.
Projects came with different rubrics, however all students were evaluated on all of the goals based on discussions between the teachers and the students in the application of knowledge and the quality of their work and ability to follow directions.
Goal Met: Students will demonstrate appropriate work ethic, safety, and respect throughout the labs.
Goal Met: Students will demonstrate basic sewing skills
Goal Met: Students will identify different sewing notions and parts of the sewing machine.
Goal Met: Students will construct an item made from fabric using all skills learned in class following a pattern.
