Colorado State University

Program of Study

FACS & Teacher Licensure
Colorado State University

CSU offers the only Family and Consumer Sciences Undergraduate program in the state.  This program also has an Education Concentration, thus I've also joined the Educator Preparation program with the university.

This degree requires the same core curriculum of other degrees to include chemistry, math, english composition and psychology courses.  FACS-specific courses include a wide range of classes in preparation to teach the many courses offered by FACS teachers.

Education-specific courses are required for the educator preparation program.  These courses are specific in understanding pedagogy and equipping teachers with the tools they'll need to lead students in the classroom.  University students are placed in local middle schools and high schools with instructors who are active teachers and administrators.

Below are a few classes required for this degree and licensure:

FACS 320: Finance-Personal and Family

EDUC 340: Literacy and the Learner

INTD 129: Introduction to Interior Design

EDUC 350: Instruction I: Individualization/Management

Why I chose Family and Consumer Sciences:

People will sometimes complain about some of the practical stuff they didn't learned in school.  Family and Consumer Sciences

Colorado Family and Consumer Sciences Colorado

classes teach many practical essentials, as well as help develop in more occupational career-finding skills.  In deciding to invest in the next generation, I also decided on FACS (or FCS) because of what it teaches: the basics of becoming a responsible, independent adult.  Below are just a few classes that FACS offers and small descriptions.

Career Pathways: students identify their goals, skills and attributes to help explore possible career choices.

Life Management: teaches resource management, finances, job and career.

Relationships: focuses on healthy interpersonal relationships and effective communication.

Nutrition and Wellness: educates about healthful food choices and exercise education.

ProStart: affiliated with the Colorado/National Restaurant Association, based on the National ProStart curriculum

Wage Earning/World of Work: teaches about career assessment, job interviews and work ethic.

Interior Design: based on professional standards, focused on housing and furnishings.
Fashion Design and Merchandising: an introduction to the profession focused on fashion merchandising and construction.
