This lesson has students watching a lecture and completing a part of a major assignment that helps them in deciding what their major aspirations are, how to embrace those dreams, and (in a later lesson) how to plan to get to those dreams.
Students will have watched a TED Talk by Derek Sivers prior to the lesson.
The students explore their own "DUMB" goals (Brenden Burchard), making them more concrete in their minds by drawing them (Patti Dobrowlski), and developing a growth mindset to embrace those dreams Carol Dweck.
DUMB stands for: Dream-Driven, Uplifting, Method Friendly, and Behavior Triggered.

The following is a sneak peek of a Car Buying Lesson Plan I created for the Literacy and the Learner course. The lesson incorporates various strategies taught in that class. The PDF file in this section is available for the full version of the lesson I submitted in April 2015.

This character map could be used to help students identify the needs and wants they may have as a driver. This exercise can help students decide on the kind of car they may be interested in one day owning.

Claim Evidence Reasoning Conclusion A common strategy to helping students make evidence-based claims is called CERC. In helping students make these types of claims themselves, they will likely think more critically about any claims they and/or others make.

In this article called "The Young Adolescent Learner," we were instructed to annotate the article with our thoughts. This type of close reading helped me to better process the article.

In the Management Plan, I was given the opportunity to design my own classroom! With so many different areas that Family and Consumer Sciences can teach, I developed an extensive floor plan that would be a dream-come-true for a FCS department!

In the Management Plan, I was given the opportunity to design my own classroom! With so many different areas that Family and Consumer Sciences can teach, I developed an extensive floor plan that would be a dream-come-true for a FCS department!

The this lesson, students were to go through "Kelly's" financial documents to determine how her actual spending compared to her budget. Even though checks are not as common, they are still used so students should know the basic parts of a check. This lesson can be found in the Teacher Work Sample on page
